Key takeaways

  • Puppies need 3 times their resting energy under 4 months and 2 times after, per the Merck Veterinary Manual, compared with 1.6 times for a neutered adult.
  • Feed four meals a day from 6 to 12 weeks, three from 3 to 6 months, and two from 6 to 12 months, per the American Kennel Club.
  • At $2.50 a pound, a puppy food bill from 8 weeks to 12 months runs about $143 for a 10-pound adult dog and about $479 for a 50-pound adult dog.

A puppy needs about three times its resting energy until 4 months old and about two times after that. For a puppy that will weigh 50 pounds as an adult, that is about 540 calories a day at 8 weeks and about 900 at 16 weeks. This puppy feeding calculator guide gives meals per day, calories, and cups by age, plus the first-year food bill.

How much to feed a puppy: the formula

How much to feed a puppy depends on current weight, not adult weight. Start with resting energy requirement (RER), which is 70 times body weight in kilograms to the 0.75 power. Then multiply by the puppy factor.

The Merck Veterinary Manual lists the factors in its energy requirement table. Puppies under 4 months use 3 times RER. Puppies over 4 months use 2 times RER. A neutered adult uses 1.6 times RER. The manual calls any calculation "only a starting point."

A worked example for a 7.7-pound, 8-week puppy:

  1. Convert to kilograms: 7.7 lb is 3.5 kg.
  2. Find RER: 70 x 3.5 to the 0.75 power is about 179 calories.
  3. Multiply by 3 for a puppy under 4 months: about 536 calories a day.
  4. Divide by the food's calories per cup. At 400 calories a cup, that is about 1.3 cups.

Puppy feeding schedule: meals per day by age

A puppy feeding schedule drops from four meals to two over the first year. The American Kennel Club's puppy feeding timeline sets the pattern.

AgeMeals per dayCalorie factor
6 to 12 weeks43 x RER
3 to 4 months33 x RER
4 to 6 months32 x RER
6 to 12 months22 x RER

The same AKC page says large breed puppies should be eating unmoistened dry puppy food by 9 or 10 weeks, and small dogs by 12 or 13 weeks. Feed at regular times in regular amounts. Split the daily total evenly across meals.

Puppy food calculator: cups by age and adult size

This puppy food calculator table shows calories and cups for four adult sizes. It estimates puppy weight with the straight-line rule from our puppy weight calculator guide, where weight equals adult weight times age in weeks divided by 52. It assumes a puppy food at 400 calories per cup.

Age10 lb adult25 lb adult50 lb adult75 lb adult
8 weeks160 kcal, 0.4 cup319 kcal, 0.8 cup536 kcal, 1.3 cups727 kcal, 1.8 cups

The small dip between 16 weeks and 6 months is real. It is the switch from 3 times RER to 2 times RER, and it happens just as growth slows. Straight-line weights are rough, so weigh your own puppy and rerun the formula.

$143 to $650

The puppy food bill from 8 weeks to 12 months at $2.50 a pound, ranging from a 10-pound adult dog to a 75-pound adult dog. See your breed's full first-year total in the PetBudget calculator.

What a puppy costs to feed in the first year

A puppy's first-year food bill scales with adult size, because bigger puppies eat more and for longer. The table below adds up daily calories week by week from 8 weeks to 12 months. It assumes 400 calories per cup, about 4 ounces per cup, and $2.50 a pound.

Adult sizeFood from 8 weeks to 12 monthsPounds of foodCost

25 lbabout 182,000 kcalabout 114 lbabout $285
50 lbabout 307,000 kcalabout 192 lbabout $479
75 lbabout 416,000 kcalabout 260 lbabout $650

These are food-only figures at a mid-tier price. Puppy formulas, a premium brand, or wet food raise them. PetBux reports that wet food costs 2 to 4 times as much as kibble per calorie. For the other first-year costs, see our first-year pet cost ledger and the dog food cost guide.

When to switch from puppy food to adult food

Switch from puppy food to adult food by size, not by a calendar date. The AKC says small breed puppies can switch at 7 to 9 months and larger breeds at 12, 13, or even 14 months. It also notes large breeds reach maturity between 15 and 24 months.

Its rule of thumb is simple: better to be on puppy food a little too long than not long enough. Change foods gradually over a few days to avoid digestive upset. When you switch, move from 2 times RER to the adult factor of 1.6 times RER, and recalculate cups.

Puppy raw food calculator: why this guide gives no percent

A puppy raw food calculator is harder to write than an adult one, so this guide does not publish a percent-of-body-weight rule for puppies. Percent rules circulate for adults. For example, Hepper's raw feeding guide suggests 2% to 5% of body weight for adult dogs and says to work with a vet.

Growing puppies are different because their calcium and nutrient needs are strict. The AVMA discourages feeding raw animal-source protein to dogs, citing risks to animals and people. It lists young, elderly, pregnant, and immunocompromised people as most at risk from the germs. If you want to feed raw or homemade, ask your vet for a plan built for a growing puppy. Our raw dog food calculator guide covers adult amounts and costs.

How to check that your puppy is eating the right amount

Check your puppy's body condition and growth every 2 to 4 weeks, then adjust. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention advises owners to measure with a gram scale and to reassess after 2 to 4 weeks. It also says treats should stay under 10% of daily calories.

Use these checks:

  1. Feel the ribs. You should feel them without pressing hard.
  2. Look for a waist. A healthy puppy narrows behind the ribs.
  3. Weigh on a schedule. Plot each weight and watch the trend.
  4. Count training treats. Subtract them from the meal amount.

Overweight is common. In APOP's 2022 survey, 59% of US dogs were overweight or obese. Fast growth is not a goal for large breeds. Our weigh-in guide, weighing puppies at home, shows how to track the curve.

Turn the feeding chart into a budget

Find your puppy's expected adult size in the table, read cups and meals for the current age, and multiply by your food price. Then recheck as your puppy grows.

For a first-year total tuned to your breed, use the PetBudget calculator. It builds the food line from the same calorie formula used here, and the methodology page explains each input.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I feed a puppy?

Use 3 times resting energy under 4 months and 2 times after, based on the puppy's current weight. A puppy headed for 50 pounds eats about 540 calories a day at 8 weeks and about 900 at 16 weeks. Divide by the kcal per cup on your puppy food label.

How many times a day should a puppy eat?

Four meals a day from 6 to 12 weeks is usually adequate, per the AKC. Drop to three meals between 3 and 6 months. Move to two meals a day from 6 to 12 months.

How do I find my puppy's calories if I do not know the adult weight?

Weigh the puppy and use current weight, not adult weight, in the formula. Re-weigh every 2 to 4 weeks and recalculate. The label on a puppy-formula food also gives a feeding range by weight.

When should a puppy switch to adult food?

Small breed puppies can switch at 7 to 9 months, and larger breeds at 12 to 14 months, per the AKC. Make the change gradually over a few days. It is better to stay on puppy food a little too long than not long enough.

Is there a puppy raw food calculator?

Raw feeding percentages are written for adult dogs. Growing puppies have strict calcium and nutrient needs, so raw or homemade puppy diets need a veterinary nutritionist's plan. The AVMA discourages raw animal-source protein for dogs.
