Why the underwriting tiers diverge, and the liquid buffer each breed warrants before acquisition.
A deep-chested build predisposes the Borzoi to bloat, and its cardiac and thyroid tendencies add recurring diagnostic and treatment cost through life.
A deep, narrow chest leaves this sighthound at real risk of a stomach that twists after eating, which is a surgical emergency.
Borzois can develop dilated cardiomyopathy and other heart changes that call for periodic cardiology screening as they age.
An underactive thyroid shows up in some Borzois and needs lifelong daily medication plus periodic bloodwork to keep dosing right.
Coat load, energy, and temperament shape boarding, grooming, and handling costs beyond the medical ledger.
Adjust the compounded annual CPI. Veterinary clinical services have trailed near +7.8% YoY; the pet-care basket sits lower.

A well-documented bone-cancer predisposition in tall sighthounds plus deep-chested bloat risk create rare but very expensive events, even though the breed is otherwise sturdy with minimal grooming needs.
An aggressive bone cancer that strikes the long leg bones of tall sighthounds; treatment means amputation, chemotherapy, or palliative care.
The deep-chested stomach fills with gas and can twist, a surgical emergency that also justifies a preventive stomach tack in some dogs.
Retired racers often arrive with heavy tartar and infected gums, so dental scaling and extractions are a common early expense.
Low body fat and distinct liver metabolism mean some anesthetics and sedatives need adjusted dosing, which can raise the cost of dental and surgical procedures.
