How the daily amount is calculated

01

Resting energy (RER)

The calories a pet burns at rest.

RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75
02

Life-stage factor

Growth, spaying or neutering, age and activity change the need.

kcal per day = RER × factor
03

Grams and cost

Calories become grams of food, then pounds a month, then dollars.

grams = kcal ÷ kcal per kg × 1000

Based on WSAVA and AAHA nutrition guidance. Full detail on the methodology page.

Typical feeding cost by pet size

Neutered adults on dry food at an example $2.50 per lb. Your food and price will differ.

Pet feeding FAQ

How much should I feed my dog or cat?

Start from resting energy requirement, 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75 calories a day, then multiply by a life-stage factor, for example 1.6 for a neutered adult dog or 1.2 for a neutered adult cat. Divide by the calories in your food to get grams.

Why is my bag's feeding chart different?

Bag charts are broad averages by weight band and often run high. This calculator uses your pet's life stage. Either way, adjust by body condition: you should feel the ribs without seeing them.

How much does it cost to feed a dog or cat per month?

It depends on weight and food price. A 40 lb adult dog eats roughly 20 lb of dry food a month, and a 10 lb adult cat roughly 4 lb. Enter your price per lb for your own figure.
