Key takeaways

  • A neutered 142-pound Great Dane needs about 2,550 calories a day, or 6.6 cups of 388-calorie kibble, and a male puppy rises from about 1,300 calories at 2 months to 3,300 at 1 year.
  • Giant breed puppies should stay lean: a veterinary nutritionist advises a body condition score of 4 out of 9, weekly checks, no free feeding and about 1.5% calcium.
  • PetBudget's model puts adult food at $1,139 a year, and a 2026 study found no link between bloat and diet type or meals per day, so meal timing alone may not protect a giant dog.

Great Dane feeding chart by age

How much to feed a Great Dane depends on age and weight. The table below applies the Merck Veterinary Manual energy table to the midpoint weights in Hepper's Great Dane growth chart. Puppies under 4 months use 3 times resting energy. Puppies over 4 months use 2 times.

AgeMale weightMale caloriesMale cupsFemale weightFemale caloriesFemale cups

Cups assume 388 calories a cup, the typical dry food value our dog feeding guide uses. A food at 450 calories a cup needs about 14% less volume. Always read the label on your own bag.

Daily calories by age from Merck factors (3 times resting energy under 4 months, 2 times after) and Hepper midpoint weights. The step at 4 months is the factor change.

The numbers dip between 3 and 4 months because the Merck factor steps down from 3 to 2 at that age. A growing puppy's needs do not fall at 4 months. Wynn, quoted below, says calorie needs keep rising until 6 to 12 months. Ask your vet how to smooth the step, and follow weekly body condition scores instead of the dip.

How to calculate Great Dane calories per day

Great Dane calories per day come from a four-step formula. The Merck Veterinary Manual calls the result "only a starting point." Follow these steps:

  1. Convert weight to kilograms. Divide pounds by 2.2. A 142-pound dog is 64.5 kg.
  2. Find resting energy. Multiply 70 by the weight in kilograms to the 0.75 power. For 64.5 kg, that is about 1,596 calories.
  3. Multiply by the life-stage factor. Use 1.6 for a neutered adult and 1.8 for an intact one. That gives 2,553 or 2,872 calories.
  4. Divide by calories per cup on your food's label.

How much to feed an adult Great Dane

An adult Great Dane eats about 5 to 8 cups of kibble a day. The table covers adults from 110 to 170 pounds.

Adult weightCalories a day (neutered)Calories a day (intact)Cups a day (neutered)Food a year
110 lb2,1032,3655.4$850

155 lb2,7193,0597.0$1,100
170 lb2,9143,2797.5$1,179

The yearly cost uses $3.99 a kilogram of dry food at 3,600 calories a kilogram, and no treats. PetBudget's model adds 10% for treats. For a 142.5-pound dog that is 2,808 calories, 780 grams and 284.7 kilograms of food a year, or $1,139.

Great Dane puppy food: what to look for

Great Dane puppy food should be a large breed growth diet, not a generic puppy or adult formula. Susan Wynn's IVC Journal article on feeding large breed puppies gives these targets. All are on a dry matter basis.

NutrientTarget
CalciumAbout 1.5%, or 3 g per 1,000 calories
Calcium to phosphorus ratio1:1 to 1.3:1
Phosphorus0.8% to 1%
ProteinAt least 30%
FatAt least 9% (10% to 25% is adequate)

She warns that a "calorie-calcium mismatch is probably common" with adult foods. She also says never to free feed. She advises ignoring the amounts printed on the bag. Ask your vet to check any food against these numbers.

Wynn says puppy diets are generally needed until about 6 to 9 months, when large breeds reach full skeletal height. A Great Dane finishes growing later, near age two, per Hepper. Ask your vet when to switch rather than following a calendar.

Keep a growing Great Dane lean

A lean puppy is a healthier puppy. Wynn says overweight body condition and feeding for maximum growth raise the risk of developmental orthopedic disease. She recommends a body condition score of 4 out of 9 for large, fast-growing puppies, checked weekly.

Use these checks at home:

  1. Feel the ribs. You should find them easily under a thin layer of fat.
  2. Look from above. A waist should show behind the ribs.
  3. Look from the side. The belly should tuck up toward the hind legs.
  4. Weigh monthly on a vet scale and compare with the chart.
  5. Change portions slowly, about 10% at a time, and recheck in 2 to 4 weeks.

Appetite changes around 8 months

A Great Dane's appetite can drop at about 8 months, and that is normal. Hepper says growth comes in spurts until then. After that, food intake may drop and growth may seem to stop, but the dog keeps growing more slowly.

Do not offer extra food to make up for it. Keep the measured portion, weigh monthly and score body condition weekly. A steady curve beats a full bowl.

Treats, toppers and chews count

Treats are part of the daily calories, not an extra. PetBudget's model sets aside 10% for them. For a neutered 142-pound Dane that is about 255 calories, or two-thirds of a cup of kibble.

Subtract treats and toppers from the bowl on the days you use them. A few training rewards a day cost almost nothing. A whole chew or a spoon of wet food on every meal adds real calories without anyone noticing.

How often to feed a Great Dane, and bloat

Feed a Great Dane in measured meals and ask your vet about a stomach tack. Wikipedia calls bloat the breed's greatest killer. Our Great Dane lifespan guide covers the risk numbers.

A 2026 Dog Aging Project study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association tested several feeding factors. It found no increase in bloat odds tied to diet type or the number of meals a day. It did find higher odds in dogs over 40 kilograms. Meal timing alone may not protect a giant dog.

A preventive gastropexy tacks the stomach to the body wall. PetMD says a non-emergency procedure usually costs several hundred dollars, while an emergency one easily costs $1,500 or more. A Ciência Rural case report cites a 2003 study. It put preventive surgery at $435 for a Great Dane and bloat treatment at about $1,500. Those are 2003 dollars, so expect higher prices now.

Is your Great Dane puppy growing too fast?

Weekly weight gain is the quick check for a giant breed puppy. The Elanco puppy growth chart says giant puppies typically gain 2 to 3 pounds a week. The biggest gain up to 5 pounds.

Hepper's midpoints work out to about 4 pounds a week between 2 and 6 months for a male Dane. That sits in the upper half of Elanco's band. A male at the top of Hepper's range, 100 pounds at 6 months, is gaining faster still. Weigh weekly during the first six months. Ask your vet to review the portion if gains run above 5 pounds a week.

What a Great Dane costs to feed

A Great Dane puppy costs about $880 to feed from 2 to 12 months. An adult costs $1,139 a year. The puppy figure sums monthly costs for a male at $3.99 a kilogram, interpolating months 10 and 11. A female costs about $740.

Puppy and large breed formulas often cost more per pound than basic kibble, so your bill may run higher. Food is one line of the budget. PetBudget's model puts a Great Dane at $3,674 a year all in. The dog food cost guide breaks down food by dog size, and the compare page sets breeds side by side.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I feed my Great Dane?

A neutered adult at 142 pounds needs about 2,550 calories a day, or roughly 6.6 cups of 388-calorie kibble. That is 1.6 times resting energy, per the Merck Veterinary Manual. Adjust by body condition, since the manual calls it only a starting point.

How much does a Great Dane puppy eat?

A male needs about 1,300 calories at 2 months and 3,300 at 1 year, using Merck's puppy factors and Hepper's weights. In cups of 388-calorie food that is 3.3 rising to 8.5 a day. Puppy formula labels may call for different amounts.

How many times a day should I feed a Great Dane?

Split the day into meals rather than leaving food out. A veterinary nutritionist says never to free feed a large breed puppy. A 2026 Dog Aging Project study found no link between number of meals and bloat, so ask your vet what schedule suits your dog.

Should a Great Dane puppy eat large breed puppy food?

Yes, a diet made for large breed growth. The target is about 1.5% calcium on a dry matter basis, with a calcium to phosphorus ratio of 1 to 1.3. Adult food is often a calorie and calcium mismatch for growing giant puppies.

How much does it cost to feed a Great Dane?

PetBudget's model puts adult food at $1,139 a year, or about $95 a month. A male puppy costs about $43 a month at 2 months and $110 at 1 year at the same kibble price. Puppy formulas often cost more per pound.
