Key takeaways

  • Pet Assure is a discount plan, not insurance: it takes 25% off in-house medical services at participating vets, with no claim forms, deductibles, or waiting periods.
  • The discount excludes pharmaceuticals, take-home food and flea products, outside lab work, and grooming or boarding, so the effective saving on a bill is often below 25%.
  • Its separate Mint Wellness plan costs $18, $34, or $57 a month and reimburses up to $350, $650, or $1,100 a year, which only beats its price if you use most of the benefits.

Pet Assure is a veterinary discount plan, and it is not pet insurance. The plan gives you an instant 25% off in-house medical services at participating veterinarians, according to Pet Assure's FAQ. There are no claim forms, deductibles, or waiting periods, and pets of any age or health history can join. The trade-off is that a discount is not a payout. This review covers what the plan covers, what it excludes, what it costs, and when the numbers work.

What Pet Assure is

Pet Assure offers two products. The first is a veterinary discount plan, which applies a 25% discount to eligible services at participating vets. The second is the Mint Wellness plan, which reimburses routine care from any veterinary provider, according to Pet Assure's home page.

The discount plan works at checkout. You show your member ID, and the clinic applies the discount to all eligible portions of your bill. There is nothing to submit and nothing to wait for.

Pet Assure states that it accepts pets with any diagnosed health conditions, including those traditional insurers consider pre-existing. That is the strongest reason to look at the plan. Standard insurance excludes existing conditions, as we explain in pet insurance waiting periods and pre-existing conditions.

What the 25% discount covers

The discount applies to in-house medical services. Pet Assure lists exams, vaccines, bloodwork, surgery, and microchipping among the covered services.

The plan excludes several common bill items, per the same FAQ:

  • Pharmaceuticals, including oral, injectable, and topical drugs
  • Products sent home, such as food and flea products
  • Outsourced services, such as outside lab work
  • Non-medical services, such as grooming or boarding

You also cannot combine the discount with other discounts or service packages the vet offers. Because so many bill lines are excluded, expect a real saving below 25% of the total invoice.

How much a discount saves on a real bill

Apply 25% only to the eligible portion. Our emergency vet cost guide cites CareCredit's foreign-body surgery range of $2,217-$4,383. If the whole bill were in-house medical services, a 25% discount would save about $554-$1,096 by our arithmetic.

Real invoices include medications and outside labs, which are not discounted. So treat those figures as a ceiling. Ask your vet to itemize an estimate and mark what is in-house medical.

Pet Assure Mint Wellness plan prices

The Mint Wellness plan is a reimbursement plan for routine care, sold in three tiers. The details below are from Pet Assure's Mint plan page.

TierMonthly priceYearly priceMaximum reimbursementVaccination benefit
Basic$18$216Up to $3502 a year, up to $100
Essential$34$408Up to $6503 a year, up to $150
Premium$57$684Up to $1,1004 a year, up to $200

The yearly prices are our arithmetic. Basic also pays one wellness visit up to $100, one bloodwork panel up to $100, and one fecal or urinalysis up to $50. Essential adds $100 a year each toward grooming and preventives, and Premium adds a dental benefit of one a year up to $100. Pet Assure lists no waiting period, with coverage effective immediately.

Does the math work?

A wellness plan wins only if you use the benefits. The maximum net gain equals the maximum reimbursement minus the yearly price, which by our arithmetic is $134 for Basic, $242 for Essential, and $416 for Premium.

That gain requires you to spend up to every cap. A pet that needs only annual vaccines would use a small share of the plan, so the plan can cost more than it returns. Our wellness plans versus pet insurance guide shows the same logic for insurer riders, and does pet insurance cover vaccines compares vaccine benefits side by side.

Pet Assure vs. pet insurance

They solve different problems, so do not treat them as substitutes.

The last row matters most. A discount lowers every bill by a fraction, but it does not cap your exposure. On a $5,000 in-house surgery, you would still pay $3,750 before excluded items. Use the pet insurance break-even calculator to compare it with a policy, and read is pet insurance worth it for the wider decision.

Who should consider Pet Assure

Consider the discount plan if:

  1. Your pet already has a diagnosed condition that insurance would exclude.
  2. Your vet is a participating provider, which you can confirm before joining.
  3. Your bills are mostly in-house exams, vaccines, and procedures, not medications.

Skip it if your vet is not in the network, or if you want protection from a large single bill. In that case, build a cash reserve with the emergency fund calculator or compare an insurance quote.

Checklist before you join

  1. Confirm your vet participates in the network.
  2. Ask what share of your last invoice was in-house medical, not medication or outside labs.
  3. Get the current monthly price for your pet, since it varies by plan.
  4. Read the terms on discount stacking and cancellation.

Does Pet Assure cover pre-existing conditions?

The discount applies to pets of any age and with any diagnosed health conditions, including those traditional insurers treat as pre-existing. It is a discount on services, not a payout for a covered claim, so you still pay the discounted bill.
