Why the underwriting tiers diverge, and the liquid buffer each breed warrants before acquisition.
Bloat risk, an elevated dilated cardiomyopathy rate, and a short giant-breed lifespan stack into recurring cardiology and emergency-surgery exposure that few breeds combine.
The stomach fills with gas and can twist on itself, cutting off blood flow within hours; this is an emergency-surgery case and one of the top killers of deep-chested giant breeds.
The heart muscle thins and enlarges, weakening its pumping ability; the Great Dane carries one of the higher breed rates of this condition, and it often needs lifelong cardiac medication and periodic cardiology screening.
A malformed hip joint that loosens with growth and leads to early arthritis; the breed's rapid frame growth and heavy adult weight both add mechanical strain to the joint.
An aggressive bone cancer that shows up disproportionately in large and giant breeds, usually in a limb, and typically calls for amputation or limb-sparing surgery plus chemotherapy.
Coat load, energy, and temperament shape boarding, grooming, and handling costs beyond the medical ledger.
Adjust the compounded annual CPI. Veterinary clinical services have trailed near +7.8% YoY; the pet-care basket sits lower.

A giant, deep-chested build brings bloat and joint disease, and a short lifespan with cardiac risk adds recurring, expensive care.
Loose hip joints wear into arthritis, which is common in heavy giant breeds and can end in joint replacement.
The stomach fills with gas and can twist, which is a surgical emergency in deep-chested giant breeds.
The heart muscle weakens and enlarges, reducing pumping ability and needing lifelong monitoring and medication.
Eyelids roll inward and irritate the cornea, and loose facial skin makes this a recurring St. Bernard eye problem that often needs surgery.
