Key takeaways

  • An American Curl kitten costs $1,200-$3,000 from a breeder and $50-$200 to adopt, per Spot Pet Insurance's July 2025 guide, which Cats.com's $1,000-$2,000 range sits inside.
  • PetBudget's model puts year one at $1,896 and each later year at $824, or $69 a month, for a lifetime total of $12,608 over 14 years.
  • The Cat Fanciers' Association says the ear curl is not permanent until about 16 weeks, so a kitten sold younger carries the risk that the ears do not set as promised.

How much is an American Curl? A breeder kitten costs $1,200-$3,000, and PetBudget's model puts the first year at $1,896. The detail that affects what you pay is timing, because the Cat Fanciers' Association says the ear shape is not permanent until about 16 weeks.

Why the ear timeline matters when you buy

A kitten's ears look straight at birth and curl later, so a young kitten cannot show you the final shape. The Cat Fanciers' Association American Curl profile says ears begin curling around days 3 to 5 and are permanently set at about 16 weeks. Wikipedia's American Curl article puts the start at 48 hours and says the ears stop curling after four months.

The CFA standard requires a minimum 90 degree arc of curl, not to exceed 180 degrees. A kitten whose ears tighten past that arc, or stay nearly straight, may not meet it. That matters most if you are paying a show-quality price.

Ask the breeder when the kitten will go home. A kitten released at 12 weeks may still be changing. A kitten at 16 weeks has the ears it will keep.

What an American Curl costs in year one

Year one costs $1,896 in PetBudget's model, and $1,155 of it is one-time setup. Insurance is the largest recurring line at $282, ahead of vet care at $227.

Line itemFirst year
Kitten (model default)$600
Insurance$282
Initial vet visit and vaccinations$276
Starter supplies$239
Vet care$227
Food$172
Grooming$60
Litter and behavior basics$40
Total$1,896

If the kitten costs $2,000, year one rises to $3,296. If you adopt for $125, the midpoint of Spot's range, it falls to $1,421.

American Curl monthly and yearly cost

After year one the cat costs $824 a year, or $69 a month, in PetBudget's model. Insurance and vet care make up $509 of that.

Line itemPer yearPer month
Insurance$282$24
Vet care$227$19
Food$172$14
Supplies and toys$83$7
Grooming$60$5
Total$824$69

The CFA says both coat lengths are silky and flat-lying with minimal undercoat. Combing two or three times a month keeps shedding low. That is why grooming is modeled at only $60 a year.

Spot's guide gives monthly ranges instead: $10-$40 for diet, $50-$100 for grooming and $50-$150 per routine medical visit. Those are wider and higher than the model, so treat $824 as a floor for a healthy cat.

American Curl health: ears, teeth and what is known

The breed has no confirmed breed-specific disease, but its signature feature is the place to watch. The CFA says no breed-linked health issues have been identified so far, and many breeders still test for recessive conditions. PetBudget's breed data lists ear canal narrowing, ceruminous gland issues and periodontal disease.

Spot says an ear infection vet visit can cost $150, and more if surgery is needed. Its guide also lists joint medicine at $20-$50 and dental care at around $10-$20. Those are single-visit figures from an insurer blog and not a claims analysis.

The CFA gives the cleaning routine. Use a cotton swab soaked in ear cleaner, working "up and away from the ear canal opening," and avoid pulling on the delicate cartilage. Do not tug the ears to check the curl.

Wikipedia notes that in Scottish Folds a different ear mutation causes osteochondrodysplasia. It says a CuCu American Curl observed for over two years showed no signs of this kind of defect. The curl gene is dominant and not sex-linked. See our teeth cleaning cost guide for the dental line.

American Curl lifetime cost

The lifetime cost is $12,608 in PetBudget's model, and the first year is 15% of it. The total adds year one to 13 later years at $824.

Point in lifeTotal spent so far
Year 1$1,896
Year 5$5,192
Year 10$9,312
Year 14 (lifetime)$12,608

Spot's guide estimates $16,000-$20,000 for a lifetime, which is $3,392-$7,392 above the model. Spot's higher monthly ranges for grooming and vet visits likely explain most of the gap. PetBudget's data gives a 12-16 year lifespan, so a 16-year cat would cost $14,256.

American Curl vs other cats on cost

The American Curl is the second cheapest cat in this comparison on a cost-per-year-of-life basis. Its $901 sits just above the Korat's $860 and just below a domestic shorthair's $909.

CatKitten price in modelYearly costLifetimeCost per year of life
Korat$600$797$14,621$860
American Curl$600$824$12,608$901
Domestic shorthair$800$822$13,640$909
Russian Blue$800$916$16,882$993
Bengal$1,000$1,190$18,214$1,301

The American Curl has the lowest lifetime total of the five, at $12,608, because the model gives it a 14-year life. Read the Korat price guide for the cheapest yearly cat and the Russian Blue price guide for a pricier short coat. The compare page puts any two side by side.

Is pet insurance worth it for an American Curl?

Insurance is inexpensive for a young cat and worth enrolling before any ear problem appears. The model budgets $282 a year, below NAPHIA's 2026 State of the Industry highlights figure of $435 for the 2025 U.S. average cat accident and illness premium. Only 2.29% of cats were insured in that report.

An ear problem diagnosed before enrollment becomes a pre-existing condition. Read the waiting periods guide first.

What to ask an American Curl breeder

Ask about timing and testing before you pay a deposit. Use this list.

  1. When the kitten goes home. Sixteen weeks gives you the final ears.
  2. Which recessive conditions are tested. The CFA says many breeders test, not all.
  3. The parents' ear history. Ask about chronic infections in the line.
  4. Pet or show quality. Ask what the price tier means for the ears and the contract.
  5. A written contract. Look for a return clause if a hereditary problem appears.

How to lower the American Curl cost

You lower the cost by choosing quality for health, not for ears, and by keeping the routine simple.

  1. Buy pet quality. A kitten that will never be shown does not need a show price.
  2. Adopt if you can. Spot cites $50-$200 for adoption.
  3. Comb twice a month. The CFA says two or three combings keep shedding low.
  4. Clean ears gently. Follow the CFA method and skip the swab deep in the canal.
  5. Hold a $1,500 reserve, the model's emergency figure for a small cat.
